I ran for Congress on the promise that I'd do everything I could to make our democracy work better for us as Americans. This week in Washington, I'm supporting serious campaign finance and election reform that is sorely needed. As we saw down in Georgia during the 2018 midterms, we urgently need to improve our campaign and election laws so that everyone's vote is counted, and everyone's vote matters.
One of the most important reforms we can enact in Washington is a full restoration of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), which was overturned in the Supreme Court's 2013 Shelby County decision. Without the protections of the VRA, we saw what happened in our own backyard in 2018 -- voter suppression tactics like purging the voter rolls and absentee ballot rejection based on "exact matching" were widespread.

Here are some of the other reforms I'm urging my fellow members of Congress to support so we can clean up our broken political system:

Putting
an
Automatic
Voter
Registration
system
in
place
nationwide,
to
make
registering
to
vote
easier
for
all
Americans.
If
more
of
us
are
registered
to
vote,
more
of
us
will
vote,
and
we
will
get
a
more
representative
democracy.

*
Stopping
unfair
purging
of
the
voter
rolls,
and
not
allowing
states
(like
Georgia)
to
remove
voters
from
the
rolls
for
simply
failing
to
vote
in
a
given
period
of
time.

*
Small-dollar
public
financing
,
which
would
amplify
the
voices
of
ordinary
Americans
by
providing
public
funds
to
match
grassroots
campaign
contributions.
