Hunter- With today's release of the Administration's latest budget proposal - this time slashing 24% of America's civilian footprint around the world - elite military voices are weighing in once again on what it takes to keep America safe. * TOP BRASS: Late yesterday, more than a dozen former U.S. Combatant Commanders representing all six regional commands released a powerhouse statement speaking out on why we can't cut the State Department and foreign assistance budget: "Diplomacy and development are essential to combating threats before they reach our shores." * ACTIVE DUTY: Not surprising, these former military leaders are echoing the voices of America's current regional Combatant Commanders who have all recently testified before Congress on why America's diplomatic tools and foreign assistance are critical to our national security. * BATTLE-TESTED: Since 9/11, the former Commanders are some of the most respected names in the U.S. military who have overseen America's military operations from the Middle East to Africa to Asia to Latin America - including Generals Zinni and Petraeus and Admiral Stavridis. See the full statement below. Given the threats we face overseas - particularly with the rise of an expansionist China, violent extremism, and a resurgent Ebola - it's time we heed the call of these battled-tested leaders. More soon, Liz Liz Schrayer, USGLC STATEMENT BY FORMER U.S. COMBATANT COMMANDERS PDF of statement available here http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=metZCYg6w-jMfAPUTqGOmw March 10, 2019 As military leaders who have commanded regional combatant commands in the Middle East, Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Pacific, and North America, we know that the military alone cannot keep our nation safe. Diplomacy and development are essential to combating threats before they reach our shores. We stand with and share the perspectives of our fellow combatant commanders who have testified before Congress in recent days on the strategic importance of the State Department, USAID, and other U.S. development agencies as key partners around the world to protect our interests and our values. As Congress considers next year's federal budget, we urge policymakers to continue to protect resources for America's International Affairs Budget. Doing so is critical to keeping our nation safe and prosperous in a world of global threats and great power competition. General Wesley Clark, USA (Ret.)
