Good Afternoon, AP registration is underway now! However I wanted to give students and families advice regarding the AP Exams which will be held at Sidwell Friends School from May 6th to May 17th, 2019.<https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/pdf/ap-exam-schedule-weeks-1-and-2-2019.pdf> The SFS College Counseling Office Offers the following guidelines for students considering taking an AP exam: * If a student is in an AP designated class and/or a course where your teacher has an expectation that each student takes an AP Exam, they should consider sitting for the exam for that course (i.e. Latin IV, Environmental Science). If you are unsure if your teacher has such a policy feel free to ask them yourself. * Junior year students considering studying outside of the United States for college/university should consider an AP in relevant courses (i.e. English Literature, US History), as international schools can require APs as a condition for admission (International Guide for Admissions).<https://indd.adobe.com/view/0a1ef5a3-8d40-4f1c-b7fd-9a1aa3e91cc1> * Colleges may award credit for coursework, depending on the scores a student achieves. Generally, scores of 4 or 5 will garner credit, but some schools do not accept many, if any, exams. This is often the case because numerous schools prefer that students take their own entry-level courses in order to follow the curriculum as set forth by their faculty. The College Board provides a tool to search for the AP policies at many colleges and universities which can be found here<https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/creditandplacement/search-credit-policies>. * Overall, the SFS administration wants to encourage students to be thoughtful when registering for an AP exam. Students gain more from focusing on their current coursework than studying for the AP, which is an optional part of the college admissions process for most. If studying for AP exam(s) takes away from efforts on coursework or causes additional anxiety/stress, it is a sign that one should not register for that exam. To register for AP exam(s) visit the link here and follow the instructions. If students or families have any questions, please reach out to me directly and I’ll be happy to help ☺.<https://www.sidwell.edu/parent/upper-school/ap-test-registration> Thanks so much, -Adam AP Coordinator Sidwell Friends School ortiza@sidwell.edu<mailto:ortiza@sidwell.edu>
