Dear Truman Project Board of Directors, Hope this note finds you well. As you'll recall, at the December 2018 board meeting, the recommendations from the Member Advisory Board Committee (MABC) were passed. Below please find next steps in the process, that were communicated from the MABC to the membership today. I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have as the process moves forward. As always, thank you for your guidance and support. Hope you have a great weekend ahead! Regards, Carrie -- Carrie Kagawa Chief of Staff Truman Center for National Policy | Truman National Security Project ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Member Advisory Board Committee <info@trumanproject.org> Date: Fri, Mar 15, 2019 at 2:23 PM Subject: Member Advisory Board Committee Update To: <jmellen@trumancnp.org> To view this email as a web page, go here. <https://tracking.cirrusinsight.com/8377d3be-e1d6-42e2-8863-039d67195c91/view-s6-exacttarget-com> Fellow Members, We would like to provide you, the Membership, with an update on the work of the Member Advisory Board Committee (“MABC”). A quick refresher on the MABC: At TruCon18, Truman HQ announced plans for the creation of a Member Advisory Board (the “MAB”) – a permanent, empowered, and transparent body built into Truman’s governing structure. The intended purpose of the MAB was to represent the Membership and provide guidance and oversight to HQ and the Truman Board. In September 2019, Truman HQ announced the formation of the MABC. We, the MABC, were charged with developing recommendations for Truman’s Board of Directors on the precise size, scope, composition, and bylaws of the MAB. We began our work in October and submitted our recommendations to the Board in December. Just before the new year, the Board approved our recommendations. (Enclosed here is an executive summary of our recommendations <https://tracking.cirrusinsight.com/8377d3be-e1d6-42e2-8863-039d67195c91/cl-s6-exct-net> .) The following is the approved Mission Statement of the Member Advisory Board: The mission of the Member Advisory Board is to uphold the mission and values of the Truman Community by representing the voice of Truman Members in the governance of the Truman Community. The MAB fulfills this mission in three ways: - *For Members: *The MAB sets Membership policies and Truman Community standards and holds Truman Members accountable for living up to them. - *To the CEO and Staff: *The MAB informs and advocates for Member concerns and recommends policies to the CEO and Headquarters Staff to ensure Truman strategy, policies, and programs reflect input from Members. - *To the Board of Directors: *The MAB provides a Member perspective to the Board of Directors to ensure the Board’s decisions reflect input from Members and promotes accountability to the Mission and goals of the Community. Following the Truman Board’s approval of the MABC’s initial MAB guidance, the MABC has worked with HQ to establish the inaugural MAB nomination and election process with the goal of having the initial MAB announced by TruCon19 in June. The following is the anticipated nomination and election timeline: - Phase 1 – Nominations - March 19 - April 1. MAB Nominations accepted. - Announcement and link for nominations to be sent on March 19. - Phase 2 – TruLeaders Vote - April 12 - 26. TruLeaders (Chapter Directors and Expert/Initiative Group Leaders) cast votes to determine the top 52 candidates (the “Large Slate”). - Phase 3 – MABC and HQ Review - April 29 - May 9. MABC reviews and narrows the Large Slate to the “Ballot Slate,” mindful of the composition goals included in the MABC recommendations. The Ballot Slate will include 26 candidates (twice the size of the MAB) for voting by the full Membership. - Phase 4 – Full Membership Voting - May 14 - May 28. All Members in good standing are eligible to vote for 13 candidates from the Ballot Slate. The top 13 vote recipients will be the inaugural MAB. - MAB Announced - June 14 - 16. TruCon19. Additional details on the inaugural election process and the MABC’s MAB composition guidance can be found in the link above. We did our best to represent the wealth of input we’ve received from our fellow Members and encourage each of you to volunteer to serve on the MAB! Best, Xander Meise, Mac McEachin, Victor Marsh, Diane Mars, Joshua Marcuse, Sarah Holewinski, Meg Guliford, Barbi Appelquist, and Tripp Adams (Please note, to avoid any perceived conflict of interest in the MABC’s work, members of the MABC will not be eligible to serve on the inaugural MAB.)
