Tuesday - January 26, 2010 From the School This Week's Query Last week we heard about the history of the Civil Rights Movement from our Martin Luther King Jr. speaker, and we heard at Friday's assembly about how words can hurt. Using these experiences as a place to start, what will we do to make this a stronger community?Notes from Sally bullying.pdfThe assembly on Friday will be presented by Upper School students Wynne Graham and Rachel Brown and will be about the Seeds of Peace program that they have participated in. As part of No Name-calling Week (January 25-29, 2010), we wanted to share with you information for parents and families about bullying. Please read the attached article to find warning signs about bullying, as well as tips on what to do if you suspect or are certain your child is being bullied. Please join us on Friday evening for a performance by our Vertical Voices Theater Troupe! This creative group of 8th graders will demonstrate the techniques of Playback Theater, which all 7th graders learn as part of their Quakerism and the Arts class, and you will enjoy the evening as they act out stories provided by the audience. More information is available on the front page of the SFS website. We hope to see you there! There is one correction in the Minimester booklet that was circulated a couple of weeks ago. The Minimester described as “Courts and Criminals” will instead be the following program: Behind the Scenes of the Legal Process A mix of activities and trips exploring the various court systems and many aspects of law enforcement. Trips may include: • A tour of the District Superior Court conducted by a U.S. Marshall - civil matters - criminal matters - misdemeanors • The Senate and House of Representatives (possible visit to Congressman Chris Van Hollen’s office) • The Supreme Court • Meeting lawyers who represent both sides of a case • Visiting a moot court presentation at American University Law School • Tour conducted by a staffer of Homeland Security Attention parents of 6th through 8th graders: The second math meet of the year will be held at St. Patrick’s next Tuesday, February 2nd, after school. We will be leaving school around 2:15 and returning around 4:15. Students will enjoy delicious snacks and solve some challenging math problems with students from other area independent schools. If your child is interested in attending, he or she should contact his or her math teacher as soon as possible, as space is limited on our bus. There is a dance for all 7/8 students next Friday in the Upper School Dining Room from 7:30 – 10:00 PM. Just a reminder that all school rules apply for the dance. 7/8 Parent Peer Groups will be held during the dance hours. Parent Peer Groups for 5th and 6th graders will be held next Tuesday evening, February 2nd at 7:30 in Middle School. All 8th grade parents: please plan to attend the Upper School Curriculum Night on Monday, February 8th in the Middle School Drama Studio at 7:30 PM. This is the first step toward transition to 9th grade. Also a reminder for 8th grade parents: Upper School sports begin in mid-August, so please make your vacation plans with that in mind. As a replacement for the all-school Meeting for Worship last week, parents are invited to join us for the Meeting on Thursday, February 18th. This will be followed by a coffee sponsored by the PA Quaker Life Committee. Thank you for your patience with the change, and my apologies to those who did not receive the late message. An official welcome to AB Carneal and Patricia Savage who are here for the second semester for Sandy Dennin and Mary Milroy while they take their sabbatical leave. We are very fortunate to have such experienced pros standing in! 5th graders have now completed their semester of choral music, and 8th graders have rotated to their second semester arts classes. Reports for these classes will be posted on Educator by the second week in February. Congratulations are in order to some Middle School students! First of all, Raphael Cohen-Fuentes will represent the Middle School in the Shakespeare Monologue Festival at Imagination Stage in Bethesda. He will present his Caliban monologue from THE TEMPEST. And, last week was the Middle School Geography Bee! The following grade-level winners competed in the school bee on Friday: 5th grade winner Cole Migas, 6th grade winner Max Graham, 7th grade winner Jack Hannah, and 8th grade winner Riley Woodwell. After a tough competition, Riley emerged as the Middle School champion. He will move forward to the qualifying round of the state competition. In case you are thinking about your spring plans, Grandparents Day will be held in Lower School this year. (As most of you know, we alternate years for this event.) Please check around your house to be sure that all of your child’s belongings have come home – the Lost and Found box is full. Also be sure that your child has not “adopted” jackets that do not belong to him or her!
