Wednesday - January 6, 2010 From the School Winter Exams Schedule 1 Dear Parents, I would like to remind you of a few things about our mid-year exams: 1. If a student has a conflict in scheduling exams, he or she should schedule a make-up exam with the Academic Dean. 2. Except under most unusual circumstances, students must meet the published examination schedule. Absence for travel is not considered an adequate reason to adjust the schedule. 3. The make-up day is often used for rescheduling exams due to inclement weather (please check SFS website for weather related issues). 4. Teachers will be available to students during reading days. 5. Students should check in with the Dean of Students’ Office if they plan to have lunch during exam days. 6. Please call your Academic Dean for any exam related issues. Any deviation from the exam master schedule must be approved by your Academic Dean. If a student is doubling up in any subject matter, they must take two exams on the very day that subject matter midterm exam is scheduled. Exam Make-up day is scheduled for students who missed exams due to illness and/ or unusual circumstances approved by the Academic Dean. If school is closed due to inclement weather, we just slide everything back one day, so that the students will take the exam they have already studied for when they return. If you have any questions or concerns about the midterm exam schedule and protocol, please call or email me, I will gladly help. Many thanks, Mamadou Guèye Academic DeanH1N1 and Seasonal Flu Vaccine Clinic Wednesday, January 6, 2010 Lower School Gymnasium Bethesda, MD 3:00pm to 6:00pm Open to all Sidwell families, especially for children under the age of 10 that need their second dose of the H1N1 vaccine $24.00 for H1N1 vaccine $30.00 for Seasonal vaccine Jasmin Whitfield MS/US Nurse Dollars for Scholars Events It's Sally Foster Time! Based on your responses we have come up with a revised challenge for you: We challenge you to not drive alone at least one way to school one day a week. You can carpool, walk, bike, or use any form of public transportation. We recognized that a lot of you asked for a carpool list so we included directions for you to make your own carpool list on the Sidwell website. We will send a short survey in the third week in January that will let you record your success or plans for participation in this project. Remember: Friends don’t let friends travel alone! How to create a neighborhood carpool list It is easy to create a list of Sidwell families who live in your zip code by following these simple steps: 1. Log in to the parent portal 2. In the “Welcome Back” box, click on the Student/Parent Directory 3. In the Search box, enter your zipcode 4. All families in the zipcode will be listed. To select those in your grade level, click on the adult’s name and his/her children will be listed in the box on the upper right of your screen. Other News Green Tip of the Week What Happens to your Christmas Tree Now? Unfortunately, just because someone picks up your tree doesn’t mean it will be recycled or composted. It could end up in a landfill, where it will take time to biodegrade. So, check with your municipality to find out what they do with trees. If they don’t recycle or mulch, you have options. Take your tree to a local recycling plant, such as: Unity Disposal & Recycling (301) 990-2049 Fort Totten Transfer Station (202) 727-1000 Arlington, VA Christmas Tree Dropoff (703) 228-6570 or College Hunks Hauling Junk at 1-800-JUNK-USA. Or you can Chop it yourself and use it for firewood and kindling. The Green Team.
