Tuesday - March 2, 2010 From the School This Week's Query How can we find the right balance between our social and academic lives?Notes from Sally Parental Permission Middle School.docxEvents this week: Conversations with Sally 6th grade Wednesday morning. Curriculum Night for 8th grade families tonight at 7:15 in the Middle School Drama Studio. Reminder to 7/8: The dance is this Thursday night from 7:00 – 9:30 in the Upper School Dining Room! The school dress code applies. Admission price is one food item for our food drive. Peer groups will meet concurrently. Our food drive is in full swing. Please remember to grab your child and go shop for food items on your list. As a result of the storm, our food drive is a week shorter than it was last year and the demand for items is greater. Please help us help our partner organizations. We are also looking for parent volunteers to aid in counting and transporting the weeks of March 8th. If you can have any time, please contact Sherri Cafritz at sldcafritz@aol.com. The research team from the Yale School of Forestry will be here on campus on Wednesday and Thursday. We would like very much to have every student’s participation in the survey process! Permission forms went home last week; if you have not yet seen one, another copy is attached to this letter. Thank you so much for your consideration of this request! Next Tuesday we will be holding the annual National Latin Exam for all students who take that language. In addition, all 8th graders and 7th graders who take Chinese will be going to National Geographic to see the Terra Cotta Warriors exhibit in the morning. Monday was the first day of the third trimester and the beginning of spring sports. Second trimester reports will be posted before spring vacation. Congratulations to the Middle School Playback Theatre Troupe, Vertical Voices, who performed on Sunday afternoon at Interesections: A New American Arts Festival at the Atlas Theatre! Upper School Theatre Performance Reservations are now being accepted for the Upper School production of "The Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde. This masterpiece is probably the most famous of all comedies. It revolves wittily around the most ingenious case of "manufactured" mistaken identity ever put into a play. Many students have enjoyed reading this play as part of the 10th grade English literature curriculum. Performances are Friday, March 12th and Saturday, March 13th at 8:00 pm and Sunday, March 14th at 2:30 pm. Read MoreDance is a Huge Success for Haiti! On Friday February 26th, the Dining Room was rocking and the community joined together to raise much-needed earthquake relief funds for Haiti. To the music of Rickey Payton, his Urban Nation Hip Hop Choir, Glenn Pearson, and their bands, everyone danced, enjoyed great food, and celebrated coming together as a community for an important cause. The Help for Haiti Dance was a tremendous intergenerational effort. Upper School students manned the donation table and decorated, parents provided delicious food, Meriwether-Godsey prepared fruit displays, the US Photography Club donated photographs and artists of all ages made the array of colorful Haitian flags which decorated the walls. Middle School Principal, Sally Selby even provided a cameo singing appearance. To date, the community through the combination of the Help Haiti Dance, 4th grade coin collections, Middle School bake sales and coin collections, and other donations has raised almost $30,000 to help those in Haiti who are in desperate need.
