Curriculum Night for US Parents - TONIGHT, February 17
February 17, 7 pm Caplin Theater, Kogod Arts Center
Join Principal Ellis Turner, Academic Dean Mamadou Guèye and the Department Chairs for a comprehensive presentation on the Upper School curriculum. Learn about the curricular offerings in each discipline, including new courses for 2010-11.School Dances
The Valentine’s Dance will take place on Saturday, February 20, from 8:30 to 11:00 pm. Same rules and guidelines as before!
Please also let your children attend the Help for Haiti dance on Friday, February 19. This is a fundraiser for an important cause!

Actions speak louder than words. Help Haiti by coming to the Dance this Friday, February 19 from 7 -11pm. Bring a donation or a flag. Join students of all ages, parents, families, employees and friends as the School works to support those in such desperate need in Haiti. Come swing, rock, boogie, jive, dance and enjoy as the community comes together to enjoy the fantastic live music of Rickey Payton and Glen Pearson.
Donations will go to The Clermont Foundation Orphanage of Jacmel, Haiti and HOPE/Pwoje Espwa, who are desperately trying to provide support for those who have no home, food, water, clothes and are suffering. HELP HAITI and make a FLAG

Get those creative juices flowing – have fun, help to liven up the Dining Room for the Haiti Dance and help to raise money – all at the same time. Parents, students and siblings alike can make them. The more flags the better. Get out some paper and markers. They don’t need to be complex. Please read more for the simple directions. Join the fun to help a nation that is in dire need. FOOD donations for the dance
We are hoping to have a big turnout for Friday night’s Help for Haiti Dance from 7 to 11 p.m. Please join the effort and help provide food for the evening. We know everyone will be hungry after cheering on the SFS basketball team at the Kenworthy Gym farewell and we don’t want any dancers to miss a beat!

The meeting notes of the junior student, parent and faculty stress symposium held last semester are now available for reading on the CHI portion of the PA website - click here. We thank all of the faculty, especially Ellis Turner, Rebecca Zug and Gaby Grebski, all the parents, especially those who served as facilitators and Linda Bianchi who codified the reports from various discussion groups, and all of the students who took the time to participate in this opening dialogue about student stress at Sidwell. These notes are posted in the hope that you and your student(s) will think about the issues raised and the various reported reactions to better understand how the three communities can work together to ensure a continued healthy social and learning experience for the students and a supportive while demanding environment created by parents and faculty. This is a difficult balance to achieve, and can best be maintained through frequent open communication among the communities. CHI is interested in your questions, comments and feedback. CHI was created and remains committed to facilitating that conversation and addressing these issues. With this past faced lifestyle comes a level of stress and anxiety that actually works in opposition to their progress. Learn how to S.A.V.E. your child (and yourself in the process) from stress and anxiety. On Friday, March 12th from 7:30-8:30am in the Meeting Room, Dr. Vidisha Patel (Sidwell '81) will be talking about what stress looks like for you and your child and ways to alleviate its impact on your lives.

Green Tip: Green De-Icing
Salt gets into the soil and can leach heavy metals (nitrogen and cyanide) into the water supply, deprives plants of nutrients (creating more algae) and can burn pets’ paws. Some greener ways to remove ice from roads, sidewalks and driveways:
1. Sand or birdseed doesn’t de-ice, but gives you traction.
2. Use less salt: the optimal salt amount is 1 handful per square yard or 3 square yards for CaCl.
3. Read the label: Sodium Chloride (NaCl) can contain cyanide. Potassium Chloride (KCl) should also be avoided (It was used in large quantities by Dr. Kevorkian for euthanasia). Calcium Chloride (CaCl) is better. Keep all salt away from plants.
4. Avoid nitrogen products – they are ineffective at low temps and require a lot of the product, plus the nitrogen will run off and contaminate the water supply.
5. If replacing your driveway, consider “snow melt mat” (heats from below)
