Tuesday - April 27, 2010 From the School This Week's Query How do we know and respect our peers’ personal boundaries?Notes from Sally The assembly this week will be a presentation on the different Minimester programs. Parents are welcome to join us at 2:30 on Friday in the theater. Parents are also invited to join us for Meeting for Worship in the Kenworthy Gym Thursday morning at 8:10 and for the program that follows. Transition Meetings are on the calendar for current 4th and current 6th grade families. All current 6th grade families whose children will be continuing at SFS in the fall are strongly encouraged to join us for the Rising 7 Meeting on Tuesday, May 11th at 7:30 in the Drama Studio to hear about the structure of the 7/8 program. There is also a meeting for families of new rising 6th graders on Tuesday, May 18th – current 5th grade families need not attend. There are also transition activities planned for those making the move to Upper School. In addition to the parent panel next Thursday evening (May 6), you have this invitation: Come take a closer look at your child’s home away from home for the next four years. Diana Lazarus, Ninth Grade Dean, will conduct an informal tour of the Upper School on Friday, May 21st at 8:00. The tour will begin at the Upper School Dean’s Office(arts center end of the main floor of Upper School.) No need to RSVP, but please sign in at the Dean’s office. The sixth grade party is this Friday night from 7:30 – 9:30 at the Lower School. Dress is casual and should follow the regular school dress code. We have been reminding students to be especially careful with their laptop computers. We have had several that have disappeared from common areas around the campus when left unattended. Congratulations to the cast and crew of Beauty and the Beast, Jr! Tim Reagan would like to express particular thanks to the many parent volunteers who helped out, especially Teresa Plotkin and Karen Moran. With over sixty 7/8 students participating in the production, Teresa and Karen led a tremendous parent work force to make sure our students were well-fed during production week. They also helped coordinate the backstage parental support force - aka: Backstage Angels. 8th grade closing ceremony dress guidelines: (From the Parent/Student Handbook): “Eighth grade boys should wear dress shirts (any color) and ties, slacks (no jeans), street shoes (no sneakers) and no jackets. Eighth grade girls should wear simple dresses or dress slacks (any color). No strapless or halter tops are allowed. For this ceremony, all students are seated on the stage in front of the audience, so the choice of dress should be modest.” 8th grade families will receive 4 tickets for the evening ceremony. A few additional tickets will be available, but the venue will not hold large parties of extended family for each student. Tickets will be mailed in mid-May. As part of the end of year activities, eighth graders put together a “time capsule,” which is a big envelope of mementos about Middle School. If you would like to write a letter to your son or daughter to be enclosed in the time capsule, please send or bring it into the office by the end of June. The time capsules will be opened just before the students’ Upper School graduation. Parents of current sixth graders – remember that language selection forms are due this Friday, April 30th. Parents of current seventh graders: arts selection forms are due next Monday, May 3rd. The Sidwell Friends Middle School students will host a Reception and Art Exhibit of their creations from 6 pm to 7:30 pm on May 11th. The Art Exhibit will display works created during the school year. Parents and friends are invited to attend the Reception and Art Exhibit to sample and enjoy Sidwell Middle School Students’ creative energy and talent. (Note – this is the same evening as the Transition meeting for current 6th grade families.) Sidwell’s Middle School students continue to have extraordinary success in the annual area-wide math competitions. Here are some of their recent accomplishments: Maryland Math League Contest: In February, all 6th, 7th and 8th graders participated in the annual Maryland Math League Contest. Students all over the DC Metro area completed 40 challenging questions in 30 minutes. Our top scorers in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade each earned 2nd place in the region for their cumulative scores as a team. In addition, Chase Migas tied for first place in the region with a perfect score. 8th graders Chase Migas, Benny Miller-Gootnick, Avikar Govil, Matt Levy, and Noah Nash, 7th graders Riley Davies, Gigi Stark, Claire Thompson, Mikal Nathani, and Yasmin Siahpoosh, and 6th graders Sammy Singer, Alexander Pierson, Robel Selassie, Max Albert, Alexander DiMeglio, Max Johnson-Fraidan, Taylor Knibb, Tyrone Patterson, Avery Schoenberg, and Jacob Walker were all among the top 20 individual scorers for their grade level in the DC Metro area. Math Meets: We just recently completed our final math meet of the season. Out of the three meets, which included all of the most competitive DC area private schools, Sidwell won first place twice, and second place once. Congratulations to all 6th, 7th , and 8th graders who competed. 5th graders can look forward to attending the math meets next year when they are in 6th grade.Instrumental Music Rehearsals For the week of April 27-30: 5/6th String Ensemble, Wednesday rehearsal period 7/8th String Ensemble, Wednesday rehearsal period Jazz/Rock Band, Thursday 3:45-5:00 Massenet (Harp and Violin solo only) Friday break period Choral Music Rehearsals Boys Ensemble, Tuesday 2:30-4:30Girls Ensemble, Wednesday rehearsal Period8th grade group (Blue Moon), Friday 3:30-4:30Concert Dates 7/8 Choral and Instrumental Concerts: Wednesday, May 26th 7:30pm Friday, May 28th 1:45pm 6th Grade Chorus and 5/6 Instrumental Ensembles: Thursday, June 3rd 7:30pm Friday, June 4th 2:30pm * * Dress for all concerts is Black and Whites * *Join us in Hawaii The Grand Hawaii Environmental Service Trip is going and is nearly full! It is July 6-21 and there is still room for one or two more people (grades 7-10). First come, first served! Review the intinerary or sign up for the trip on sidwell.edu/summer. This is a truly unique opportunity to do meaningful service with some of the leading conservation groups on the Big Island. We will be replanting native forest that provides habitat for critically endangered birds. Contact Dave Wood or Margaret Pennock if you have questions.Summer Math Tips The summer months give us the opportunity to engage in activities that feed our minds in subject areas outside of the school program. Unfortunately, it is also a time when math concepts and skills can get rusty. Mr. Callard, our Middle School Math Coordinator, offers a list of resources for 5th and 6th graders available over the internet. These workbooks can be conveniently ordered from the website. Your child’s homeroom teacher will steer you to the particular workbooks that would complement your student’s math program this year. We encourage parents to consider taking advantage of this opportunity for skill reinforcement. This summer work is not intended to accelerate a student’s math placement but rather to review and maintain the skills that they have learned this year. We believe that it will help students get off to the best possible start in the fall. Grade-specific tips follow...
