Tuesday - April 20, 2010 From the School This Week's Query What do we do when two friends ask us to take sides? Can we stay neutral?Notes from Sally This week we will have our in-school performances of Beauty and the Beast, Jr! Daytime performances will take place Thursday and Friday mornings at 9:30. Public performances are Friday evening at 7:30 and Saturday at 2:00. Parents are welcome at any performance – no reservations necessary. This Wednesday evening a group of 8th graders will be attending the annual presentation of the Goldman Environmental Prize. This outstanding program is a highlight of Earth Day week, and the annual winners are featured on the posters in our first floor hallway. Next Friday evening, April 30th, is the sixth grade party from 7:30 – 9:30 PM at the Lower School. Greg Mortenson (of Three Cups of Tea fame) has done it again! In his new book, Stones Into Schools, “Dr. Greg” chronicles his most recent efforts to build schools for girls in remote areas of Pakistan and war-torn Afghanistan. The results have been amazing. Last week, Middle School launched its annual “Pennies for Peace” drive to support his work. Please help our students collect coins, dollars, whatever you can spare to make schooling a reality for all the children served by this remarkable man. Collection points are located in the 5/6 and 7/8 hallways, as well as at the 37th Street desk. Our drive will run through the month of May. Thank you to all families who donated books for the Used Book Fair! It was a great success. Leftover books will be donated to different DC public schools, various charities, and also sent to The World Bank for distribution. Many thanks to the parent volunteers who helped set up and work at the fair and especially to Fatim Haidara and Colette Chichester. This past Friday, April 16th, approximately 35 sixth, seventh & eighth grade students participated in the National Day of Silence. For students, their silence was a serious commitment, running from 7am until 3pm. Started in 1996 at the University of Virginia, the National Day of Silence is a day when students nationwide take a vow of silence to bring attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in their schools. In 2008, students at more than 8,000 middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities participated. A reminder: Parents of current fifth and sixth graders are invited to offer perspectives that would be useful to us as we begin the placement process for next year. Helpful information includes perspective on friendships or on your child's learning style, but we ask that you do not request specific teachers. We will take into account the information that you send us, but we will of course make the final decisions. Send letters by hard copy or email to me by April 30th. You are cordially invited to The Amethyst Trio in Concert- A Benefit for Partners in Health, Haiti Medical Relief. SFS students Adam Heins, piano and violin, Ruby Miller-Gootnick, flute and piano, and Benny Miller-Gootnick, cello, will be presenting a program of trios, duos, and solos on Saturday, May 1, 2010. Contact Betty Miller or Leslie Heins for more information.Instrumental Music Pit Band Monday April 19 ~ 3:45-5:45 Pit Band Tuesday April 20 ~ 2:30-6:00 (dress rehearsal) Pit Band Wednesday April 21 ~ 3:30-6:30 Final Dress Rehearsal Pit Band Thursday April 22 ~ 8:30 am Call, 9:30 Show #1 Pit Band Friday April 23 ~ daytime SHOW #2 TBA Pit Band Friday April 23 ~ 6:30 Call 7:30 SHOW #3 Pit Band Saturday April 24 ~ 1:00 call 2 :00 SHOW #4 5/6 String Ensemble, Concert Band, Guitar Trio, and 5th Grade Handchime Choir Wednesday April 21 ~ rehearsal period Quakerism in the Arts Parents are invited to attend Quaker Meeting with their child on Thursday morning, April 29 from 8:10 to 8:40 am in the Kenworthy gym, as well as a talk on Quakerism in the Arts hosted by the Middle School Quaker Life Committee. The story takes place in a lovely French provincial town where the beautiful Belle lives with her father – a dotty inventor. When her father doesn’t return from a trip to the local fair, Belle rushes off to find him. To her dismay, she discovers he is being held captive in an old castle by a horrible beast. She trades her freedom for his, and the “tale as old as time” begins. How Belle tames the unfortunate Beast and his ultimate transformation into a handsome prince continues to enthrall audiences. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, Jr. combines unique staging, memorable music, and sweet period costuming for a family theatre at its best. Based on the award-winning animated feature, the stage version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, Jr. includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, (the team responsible for Little Shop of Horrors), plus new songs written by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice (ALADDIN, AIDA). Appropriate and entertaining for all ages, the production features a stellar cast of students directed by Middle School Drama Teacher Tim Reagan and produced by Selena Anguiano. Musical direction is by Colin James, and the orchestra is conducted by music teacher Michael Henderson.Spring Arts Performances Friday April 23, 7:30pm & Saturday April 24, 2pm: MS Musical "Beauty and the Beast" Thursday April 29 (time tbd): US Visual Arts Show Opening Reception Friday April 30, 7:30pm: US Chorus Concert Sunday May 2, 2:30pm: US Jazz and Chamber Orchestra Concert Thursday May 6, 4:00pm and 7:00pm: US Dance Ensemble (behind Zartman) Friday, May 21, 7:30pm, Saturday May 22, 7:30pm & Sunday May 23, 2:30pm: US Musical "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" Wednesday May 26, 7:30pm & Friday May 28, 1:45pm: 7/8 Choral and Orchestra Concert Thursday June 3 & Friday June 4 (times tbd): 5/6 Orchestra and 6th grade Chorus Concert Senior Project Performances – stay tuned PA Announcements PA Retreat The PA Retreat is scheduled for Thursday, May 13, 2010 from 6:00-9:00 pm in the Upper School Dining Room. Calling all Runners Swab a Cheek, Save a Life Campaign was created by a few Sidwell Friends parents who are passionate about fighting racial disparities in the area of bone marrow transplants. Tragically, only a small percentage, as low as 17% of some minority patients, who conduct a formal search for a bone marrow donor actually find a match and go on to receive a transplant. In an effort to dramatically increase the number of minority bone marrow donors in the registry, Swab a Cheek, Save a Life has secured 60 entries into the Marine Corp Marathon and 10K Road Race. For those of you not quite up to the 26 miles, the 10K is a 6 mile trek from the National Mall to the Marine Corps War Memorial. We invite you to run on Team Swab-a-Cheek, on October 31, 2010. Each runner is asked to do some fundraising and to pay the MCM registration fee. Funds raised by participants will support Swab a Cheek, Save a Life’s mission: to increase racial and ethnic diversity in the registry so that everyone who needs a bone marrow transplant can find their match. For more details or to sign up, contact third grade moms and founders: Lisa Horowitz (transplant recipient) or Sara Jane Harris at [email protected]. You can also go to swabacheek.org or call 561-982-2919.Conversation with Historian James Zug Come Join the Conversation with Historian James Zug on April 25 At the end of this school year, James Zug, author of The Long Conversation: 125 Years of Sidwell Friends School 1883-2008, is moving to Delaware with his wife Rebecca, the current Upper School Dean of Students, as she takes a job at Wilmington Friends School. In writing SFS's history, Jim spent more than two years pouring through our archives and interviewing dozens of alumni and current and former trustees, parents, faculty and staff. In order to take final advantage of this extraordinary resource, the Quaker Life Committee and the Parents of Black Students have invited Jim to lead a discussion on one of the most pivotal moments in the school's history: the story of Sidwell Friends’ experience with integration in the 1950s and 1960s and on the implications it has for diversity concerns today. We are also delighted that Jeffrey Mazique will attend. In 1956, Mazique became the first African American student to enroll at Sidwell Friends. A once and future SFS parent, Mazique will join us in this conversation to share some personal observations. The discussion will take place THIS SUNDAY, April 25, at 3:30 pm in the Zartman House Drawing Room. We hope you can join us for this special event. For questions, please contact Geoff Klineberg or Nicole Scott.Green Tip Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs) -- those cute little corkscrew ones -- are great because they use less energy, but they pack up to 5 mgs of mercury, which, though it’s not much, can add up if disposed of improperly. In some states, it’s illegal! So where should you put them? Hazardous Waste Collection in your community Sylvania has “RECYCLEPAK” program – you order a pack of bulbs from their website in exchange for 12 burned out bulbs (and prepaid shipping) -- recyclepak.sylvania.com. If they break, don’t pick them up with bare hands. Use a paper towel, seal in plastic bag and take to recycling center. Open windows in the room for a while. Don’t forget, EARTH DAY IS THURSDAY! CELEBRATE OUTSIDE!Newsletter Information How to Subscribe To receive the Tuesday Letter via e-mail, send an e-mail to [email protected] with only the word "SUBSCRIBE" in the subject line.
