James Zug, author of The Long Conversation: 125 Years of Sidwell Friends School 1883-2008, is moving to Delaware with his wife Rebecca, Upper School Dean of Students, as she takes a job at Wilmington Friends School. In writing SFS's history, Jim spent more than two years pouring through our archives and interviewing dozens of alumni and current and former trustees, parents, faculty and staff. In order to take final advantage of this extraordinary resource, the Quaker Life Committee and the Parents of Black Students have invited Jim to lead a discussion on one of the most pivotal moments in the school's history: the story of Sidwell Friends’ experience with integration in the 1950s and 1960s and on the implications it has for diversity concerns today. We are also delighted that Jeffrey Mazique will attend. In 1956, Mazique became the first African American student to enroll at Sidwell Friends. A once and future SFS parent, Mazique will join us in this conversation to share some personal observations. We hope you can join us for this special event. For questions, please contact Geoff Klineberg at [email protected] or Nicole Scott at [email protected] all Junior Boys and Moms/Guardians Junior Boys and their Moms/Guardians -- please join the Senior Moms/Guardians as we salute our senior boys with song and humor (and maybe a few tears, sniff) on Saturday, May 8th, in the Kogod Arts Center Theater, 7:30 - 8:45 pm. All PA Clerks, Vice Clerks, Committee Clerks, Grade Reps, and At-large Reps from this year and those who will fill the positions next year are invited to celebrate the successful conclusion of the 2009-10 Parents Association year and share ideas and suggestions for 2010-11. This is an important time to exchange materials and information before summer is upon us, so please plan to attend. We’ll eat dinner together and then break out into small planning groups. Please RSVP no later than May 1 to Lynn Sachs at [email protected]. Other News Green Tip of the Week How to dispose of CFLs: Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs) (those cute little corkscrew ones) are great because they use less energy, but they pack up to 5 mgs of mercury, which, though not much, can add up if disposed of improperly (in some states, it’s illegal). Where do they go then? Hazardous waste collection in your community. Sylvania has a “RECYCLEPAK” program – you order a pack of bulbs from their website in exchange for 12 burned out bulbs (and prepaid shipping): www.recyclepak.sylvania.com. If they break, don’t pick them up with bare hands. Use a paper towel, seal in plastic bag and take to recycling center. Open windows in the room for awhile. Don’t forget, EARTH DAY IS THURSDAY, April 23rd! CELEBRATE OUTSIDE! Comments, questions to Louise Micallef at [email protected] Prom Letter Dear Upper School Parents: For the juniors and seniors, one of the most special events of the spring is the Prom, which will be held on Saturday, May 15. They received their invitations at school the day before spring vacation. This year it will be held at the National Press Club from 9:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. After the dinner dance, there will be an after-prom party at the ESPN Zone from 12:30 until 4:30 a.m. The Prom is aimed at celebrating the juniors and seniors - celebrating the seniors as they near the end of their tenures as Sidwell Friends School students, and to celebrate the juniors as they rise to the status of seniors. It is the case every year that some 9th and 10th grade students are invited as guests of the juniors and seniors, therefore, it is important that all parents be familiar with the information below. I want particularly to urge parents and students to remain vigilant about what continues to be a dangerous aspect of teenage culture: drinking and substance abuse. It is important to remember that School policy clearly prohibits the use, distribution, or possession of drugs and alcohol on campus and at school sponsored events. Moreover, students may not attend an event under the influence of a controlled substance. Possible penalties for violating these policies include suspension and expulsion. When planning for the Prom, please remember these other important notes. * The prom includes dinner. * The School will provide buses to the Press Club departing from the Zartman House circle at 8:30 p.m. All students MUST ride the buses to the prom. Only those who come by these buses will be allowed into the Prom. We have moved to this policy for several reasons. In no particular order, riding together helps build community among all the prom guests before the dance; buses save families money because the school covers the cost; buses help keep kids safer and free from drinking on the way to the prom (this has happened in limos in the past); it is simpler and more environmental to use buses rather than individual transportation. We realize that for some families it will be inconvenient to drive to school before and after the prom to collect your children. Carpooling with other families from your neighborhood could be a good idea. We thank you in advance for making accommodations on this special evening. * At midnight, the buses will be available to transport students to the ESPN Zone. During the after-prom party, buses will shuttle back and forth between ESPN Zone and SFS every ½ hour between 2:00 a.m. - 5:00 a.m. Student must use the buses to return to SFS; only a parent may retrieve a child directly from the Press Club or the ESPN Zone. * Students will not be permitted to bring backpacks, duffle bags or any food or drink into the Press Club. They can leave belongings safely on the buses reserved for the evening. * Please encourage your child to attend the party at ESPN Zone as a fun and safe event after the prom. The party is open to students even if they do not attend the Prom. I would like to thank Niki Fleming and all the other parent volunteers who have made this dinner dance possible (and stayed up all night for the after party!). Please don’t hesitate to contact me or the Parents Association if you have any questions. We are looking forward to a wonderful evening. Sincerely, Rebecca Zug Assistant Principal and Dean of StudentsSubmissions to this Newsletter This Upper School Newsletter is produced by parent volunteers on a rotating basis and is published each Wednesday during the school year.
