Dear Parents:


I am pleased to announce that Michael Woods has been appointed Upper
School Dean of Students effective July 1, 2010. Now in his 8th year at
SFS, Michael is well known to this community and has served Sidwell
Friends as a history teacher, an advisor to our Black Student Union, and
as Assistant JV Lacrosse coach. Prior to his arrival at the School,
Michael taught and coached at Abington Friends School, served as
Assistant Director of ONE Ministries (an educational program for
inner-city youth in Washington), and was Principal of Cornerstone
Community School, a private elementary school preparing at-risk children
for independent secondary education.


Michael Woods earned his B.A. in History at the University of
Pennsylvania and an M.A. in Liberal Studies from St. Johns College in
Annapolis. He and his wife, Tara, have two children, Olivia and
Benjamin.


I want to praise the extraordinarily fine work performed by members of
the Dean Search Committee, clerked by Upper School English teacher Min
Kim. Min and the Committee conducted an exhaustive nationwide search
that netted over 200 resumes and resulted in many late-day and weekend
meetings. We thank them for their service to this community.


Please join me in welcoming Michael into this position of leadership at
Sidwell Friends.
