APClose Vice President Biden heaped praise on the Democratic leadership on Friday, defending the Obama administration’s first 14 months in office at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser in Dallas. "He's obviously brilliant," Biden said of Obama, according to the pool. "I didn't know how good it was until I joined the outfit. And then I realized why it was I did not win." "So for those of you who endorsed me first, you all made a mistake," he told his audience at a private home. Biden called House Speaker Nancy Pelosi the “superstar” of the health care debate. “We won,” he said, saying Republicans “still believe cynicism will prevail, that the government can't do anything, that we're a bunch of socialists -- all these things you hear. I think the health care debate put a big stake in the heart of that argument." The vice president also predicted success for Democrats in the midterm elections, paraphrasing Mark Twain, saying “The reports of our demise are premature.” He said by the end of the year, 90,000 troops will be brought home from Iraq, the stock market will continue to recover and the gross domestic product will be rising. “But we have a long way to go to make up for the eight million [lost jobs] from the great recession," he said, adding that not all of those jobs would be around before November.-- Eric D.
