Tuesday - April 6, 2010 From the School This Week's Query Why does technology influence our lives?Notes From Sally This week’s assembly is singer Malcolm Dalgleish. Parents are welcome – 2:30 Friday afternoon in the theater. I welcome any comments or suggestions about our Minimester program! We are always eager to find ways to make it more effective. Please join us for a continuation of the program “Parenting in the Digital Age” with Michelle Parker. This will be next Tuesday evening. Details are elsewhere in the letter. Parents of current fifth and sixth graders are invited to offer perspectives that would be useful to us as we begin the placement process for next year. Helpful information includes perspective on friendships or on your child's learning style, but we ask that you do not request specific teachers. We will take into account the information that you send us, but we will of course make the final decisions. Send letters by hard copy or email to me by April 30th. Results from the CTP (standardized) testing that was administered in February has arrived. Look for that information in the mail early next week. There are two community events that I would like to call your attention to. The first is a Community E-Cycle at Hearst Elementary School across 37th Street from our building. On Saturday, April 17th from 9:00 a m to 12:00 noon, Hearst Elementary will be hosting its second annual neighborhood e-cycle event in the parking lot next to the school. We will be collecting the following electronics for transport to Ft. Totten: Audio/visual equipment Audio cassettes Camcorders CD Rom drives CDs/DVDs Cell Phones Computers and monitors Connectors / Cords / Wire Copy machines Fax machines Floppy drives Hard drives Memory chips Network / Video / Sound cards Pagers Power supplies Printers Scrap computer plastic Scrap computer metal Tape drives TVs VCRs VCR tapes Video games & Software Unbroken, burned-out compact fluorescent light bulbs batteries (not car batteries) Please also note that there will be a free-cycle section at this event so that you may donate working and/or in-need-of-a-minor-repair electronics which other e-cyclers may then take with them. Who knows you might find just the thing you are looking for too! This event is free, however donations to Hearst's Green Team are welcome!!! If you do choose to donate you will receive a student-decorated reusable Earth Day bag as a thank you gift. The second is a Volunteer Appreciation Day for Martha’s Table. Not only is the auction important to help maintain the 23 percent of students receiving aid, but it is FUN! For more information, visit the Sidwell Summer website. PA Announcements Parenting in a Digital World Please join us Tuesday evening, April 13th for a fabulous presentation by Michelle Parker, Ph.D., a current Sidwell parent and former Sidwell student and teacher, on parenting in a digital world. The evening is a follow-up to the FBI talk a few months ago. Michelle will talk about brain development in our kids, the truth about kids and multitasking (can they really do homework and facebook at the same time?), and the implications for parenting in this new, electronic world. Time for questions and answers will follow the presentation. Lights snacks will be served at 7pm. Presentation to begin at 7:30pm and end at 9pm. We look forward to seeing everyone there. Middle School Book Fair--Collecting Used Books Now! We are now collecting gently worn books for the Middle School Used Book Fair that will take place Tuesday, April 13 through Friday, April 16, 2010. We’ll accept fiction and nonfiction books of interest to middle school students. Some picture books will be fine, but please no adult books, textbooks, workbooks, etc. People can drop bags/boxes of books off by Cynthia Grady’s desk in the library. If you have any questions please e-mail Colette Chichester (crchichester@hotmail.com) and Fatim Haidara ( fatim.haidara@intelsat.com ).Student Self-Advocacy Student Self-Advocacy: Owning the Learning Process and Success at Sidwell Friends School Saturday, April 10 1:00pm-3:30pm MS Drama Studio Student Self-Advocacy is the set of skills a student needs to be able to speak up, ask for help, and take ownership of his or her individuallearning process. Effectively advocating for oneself can directly impact academic success and overall satisfaction at Sidwell -- and beyond. PBS encourages you to bring your MS and HS students to participate inthis important discussion. Panelists will include: * Ellis Turner - Associate Head of School * Shields Sundberg - US History Teacher / History Chair * Lauren Phillips - MS 6th Grade Teacher * Carlene Jackson - MS Advisor (Team Land) / Office Manager During this session, we plan to: * Help students to become better self-advocates * Challenge the notion held by some students that faculty engagement is to be avoided * Illustrate just how critical class participation is to academic success. Panelists will: * Express opinions on why self-advocacy skills are important * Describe the attitudes/behaviors they observe in students who are strong self-advocates * Provide parents with tips on how to support a posture of engagement in their students. Please join us for this very important discussion. Other News Green Tip Green Tip. Earth Day’s 40th Birthday! Earth Day’s 40th anniv. is April 22! Check out www.earthday.net for local events, including Global Days of Service April 17-18 and a “Song for the Earth Contest” ONLY for the UNDER 18. The winner gets to perform his/her song on the National Mall at the massive Climate Rally on Sunday, April 25th. Also, be on the lookout in the next couple of weeks for Earth Day events at/with Sidwell, including a river cleanup with the Anacostia Watershed Society on Sat, April 24. For more info, checkout www.anacostiaws.org. Comments, questions to Louise Micallef at micallefj@aol.com. P.S. Last month, one of the green tips discussed ways to conserve water. I suggested that we in America take too many showers and maybe don’t need to shower daily. Unfortunately, I tried to lighten up what I sometimes fear is a preachy column and suggested using perfume when you’re not sweaty, calling it a “French shower”. I did not intend to comment on French hygiene, merely a (not so funny) way of suggesting that Americans bathe too much. I apologize to anyone who was offended.Conversation with Historian James Zug Come Join the Conversation with Historian James Zug on April 25 At the end of this school year, James Zug, author of The Long Conversation: 125 Years of Sidwell Friends School 1883-2008, is moving to Delaware with his wife Rebecca, the current Upper School Dean of Students, as she takes a job at Wilmington Friends School. In writing SFS's history, Jim spent more than two years pouring through our archives and interviewing dozens of alumni and current and former trustees, parents, faculty and staff. In order to take final advantage of this extraordinary resource, the Quaker Life Committee and the Parents of Black Students have invited Jim to lead a discussion on one of the most pivotal moments in the school's history: the story of Sidwell Friends’ experience with integration in the 1950s and 1960s and on the implications it has for diversity concerns today. We are also delighted that Jeffrey Mazique will attend. In 1956, Mazique became the first African American student to enroll at Sidwell Friends. A once and future SFS parent, Mazique will join us in this conversation to share some personal observations. The discussion will take place on Sunday, April 25, 2010, at 3:30 pm in the Zartman House Drawing Room. We hope you can join us for this special event. For questions, please contact Geoff Klineberg at gklineberg@khhte.com or Nicole Scott at scottfree3@netzero.net. Sidwell Friends School/Washington Hospital Center Blood Drive Sidwell Friends School/Washington Hospital Center Blood Drive - This year’s blood drive will take place on Thursday, April 22nd, from 2:00 – 5:00pm in the Kenworthy Gym.
