Hi Hunter,
It was great talking with you, and I appreciate your help. I know that
it is a lot to ask for Ron to put in a good word for me when he doesn't
know me and hears about me from you out of the blue, but I'm hoping that
he appreciates my background and support and decides to help:
Background:
Judge John M. Mott is currently in consideration by the White House for
a position on the United States District Court for the District of
Columbia. Four vacancies exist on the District Court bench. A former
trial attorney and supervisor at both the Public Defender Service for
the District of Columbia ("PDS") and at the Civil Rights Division,
Criminal Section, of the United States Department of Justice, Judge Mott
has spent his entire legal career in public service working for
individual liberty, civil rights, and justice. At the Civil Rights
Division, Judge Mott investigated and prosecuted civil rights violations
as a Senior Trial Attorney, managed the operations of the Worker
Exploitation Task Force and supervised trial attorneys as Deputy Chief,
and managed the operations of the Section as Acting Chief. With his
balance of indigent defense and federal prosecutorial experience and
perspective, Judge Mott was appointed to the Superior Court for the
District of Columbia by President William Jefferson Clinton in 2000.
For almost 10 years, he has presided over Family, Criminal, Domestic
Violence, and Civil cases with distinction. For over 20 years, Judge
Mott has lived, worked, and volunteered -- primarily in areas involving
youth -- in the District of Columbia.
(I have attached a longer Bio/Talking Points in case it is helpful)
Support (the following people and many others have weighed-in in various
ways through this process -- from letters to more direct and personal
contacts):
Governor Deval Patrick
Senator Jeanne Shaheen
Congresswoman Louise Slaughter
Ricki Seidman
Robert Brandon
Gail Harmon
Steve Rabinowitz
Terry Lenzner
Ginny Sloan
Rod Boggs (Exec. Director of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and
Urban Affairs)
Wade Henderson (Exec. Director of the Leadership Conference for Civil
Rights)
Stuart Ishimaru (Acting head of the EEOC)
Tom Perez (Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights)
Bill Lann Lee (former Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights)
Rea Carey (Exec. Director of the Gay and Lesbian Task Force)
Nan Aron (President of the Alliance for Justice)
Mark Kappelhoff, Leon Rodriguez, Roy Austin, and Julie Fernandes (front
office Civil Rights Division)
DeMaurice Smith (NFL Players Union)
I have been endorsed by the Women's Bar (which only endorsed 2 or 3 of
the original 25+ candidates) and all of the other Voluntary Bars I
approached:
* GWAC (the Greater Washington Area Chapter, Women Lawyers
Division, National Bar Association)
* HBA-DC (the Hispanic Bar Association)
* APABA-DC (the Asian Pacific American Bar Association)
* WBA (the Women's Bar Association)
* DCACDL (the District of Columbia Association of Criminal
Defense Lawyers)
* BADC (the Bar Association of the District of Columbia)
Also, many trial lawyers have weighed-in for me, including Tom Green,
Michele Roberts, Greg Poe, Tom Connolly, Martin Weinstein, Roscoe
Howard, and Stuart Pierson.
Once again, thank you for your support with this, and please let me know
whether there is anything else I can provide from this end. I look
forward to getting together and talking about things other than my
candidacy for the District Court!
All the best,
John

Hi Hunter,
I write to follow-up on our conversation at George and Karen's party and
on Cristina's recent e-mail. My name is at the White House on a short
list for the President's consideration for a vacancy on the United
States District Court for the District of Columbia. The process has
been a long one, with no decision made yet, but I expect the White House
to act very soon.
For that reason, I would love to talk as soon as convenient for you. It
will only take a few minutes to fill you in on the details. Feel free
to call me on my cell phone (202-422-5369) or let me know a good number
and time to call you. If I am on the bench, I'll call you right back.
I am very grateful for your support. Thank you.
I hope that you and the family are well.
All the best,
John
