By donating and gathering pennies, the research on and patient services for blood cancers increases, and more patients are able to have effective treatment. There are collection boxes in the main offices of the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools, as well as in Zartman House and the Fox Den. Donations can also be made online. Any and all support is appreciated. If you have any questions, contact Lauren Brownlee at [email protected] or 202-537-8180. [email protected] Join the Conversation with Historian James Zug on April 25 At the end of this school year, James Zug, author of The Long Conversation: 125 Years of Sidwell Friends School 1883-2008, is moving to Delaware with his wife Rebecca, the current Upper School Dean of Students, as she takes a job at Wilmington Friends School. In writing SFS's history, Jim spent more than two years pouring through our archives and interviewing dozens of alumni and current and former trustees, parents, faculty and staff. In order to take final advantage of this extraordinary resource, the Quaker Life Committee and the Parents of Black Students have invited Jim to lead a discussion on one of the most pivotal moments in the school's history: the story of Sidwell Friends’ experience with integration in the 1950s and 1960s and on the implications it has for diversity concerns today. We are also delighted that Jeffrey Mazique will attend. In 1956, Mazique became the first African American student to enroll at Sidwell Friends. A once and future SFS parent, Mazique will join us in this conversation to share some personal observations. The discussion will take place on Sunday, April 25, 2010, at 3:30 pm in the Zartman House Drawing Room. We hope you can join us for this special event. For questions, please contact Geoff Klineberg at [email protected] or Nicole Scott at [email protected]. Other News Plant Sale at Bethesda Friends Meeting Please join us at the Bethesda Friends Meeting annual perennial plant sale on Sunday, April 18, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Lower School. We welcome both contributions of plants, which have been repotted a week ahead of time and are labeled for sun or shade, and people eager to find lovely perennials to plant in their gardens. This is the first of two fundraisers for scholarships for the Ramallah Friends School, a project of Bethesda Friends Meeting for the last 36 years. For details please contact Jillaine Smith, Bethesda Friends Meeting (301-229-3375, [email protected]). Calling All Runners! Swab a Cheek, Save a Life Campaign Swab a Cheek, Save a Life Campaign was created by a few Sidwell Friends parents who are passionate about fighting racial disparities in the area of bone marrow transplants. Tragically, only a small percentage, as low as 17% of some minority patients, who conduct a formal search for a bone marrow donor actually find a match and go on to receive a transplant. In an effort to dramatically increase the number of minority bone marrow donors in the registry, Swab a Cheek, Save a Life has secured 60 entries into the Marine Corp Marathon and 10K Road Race. For those of you not quite up to the 26 miles, the 10K is a 6 mile trek from the National Mall to the Marine Corps War Memorial. We invite you to run on Team Swab-a-Cheek, on October 31, 2010. Read MoreGreen Tip Green Tip: Healthy Lawns for Healthy People Know your local soil and plants! Home and Garden Information Center (www.hgic.umd.edu) will tell you how much and what type of nutrients to add. Another great site, www.seedland.com suggests the best plants for your area, allowing you to water less. Light on the Lawnmower. Try not to mow too much, but keep your blades sharp. Lawnmowers contribute 10% of our air pollution in summer. Try an electric or hand mower if your lawn isn't too big. Grass clippings are almost all water, so, leave them in place and they'll decompose and act as fertilizer. Water deeply, less often and only in the AM. Use automatic shutoffs when away. Organic fertilizers need less water and fewer nutrients. Check out www.safelawns.org for suggestions. Corn gluten, available at local garden stores, is a great, easily obtainable organic fertilizer.US Prom Letter Dear Upper School Parents: For the juniors and seniors, one of the most special events of the spring is the Prom, which will be held on Saturday, May 15. They received their invitations at school the day before spring vacation. This year it will be held at the National Press Club from 9:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. After the dinner dance, there will be an after-prom party at the ESPN Zone from 12:30 until 4:30 a.m. The Prom is aimed at celebrating the juniors and seniors - celebrating the seniors as they near the end of their tenures as Sidwell Friends School students, and to celebrate the juniors as they rise to the status of seniors. It is the case every year that some 9th and 10th grade students are invited as guests of the juniors and seniors, therefore, it is important that all parents be familiar with the information below. I want particularly to urge parents and students to remain vigilant about what continues to be a dangerous aspect of teenage culture: drinking and substance abuse. It is important to remember that School policy clearly prohibits the use, distribution, or possession of drugs and alcohol on campus and at school sponsored events. Moreover, students may not attend an event under the influence of a controlled substance. Possible penalties for violating these policies include suspension and expulsion. When planning for the Prom, please remember these other important notes. * The prom includes dinner. * The School will provide buses to the Press Club departing from the Zartman House circle at 8:30 p.m. All students MUST ride the buses to the prom. Only those who come by these buses will be allowed into the Prom. We have moved to this policy for several reasons. In no particular order, riding together helps build community among all the prom guests before the dance; buses save families money because the school covers the cost; buses help keep kids safer and free from drinking on the way to the prom (this has happened in limos in the past); it is simpler and more environmental to use buses rather than individual transportation. We realize that for some families it will be inconvenient to drive to school before and after the prom to collect your children. Carpooling with other families from your neighborhood could be a good idea. We thank you in advance for making accommodations on this special evening. * At midnight, the buses will be available to transport students to the ESPN Zone. During the after-prom party, buses will shuttle back and forth between ESPN Zone and SFS every ½ hour between 2:00 a.m. - 5:00 a.m. Student must use the buses to return to SFS; only a parent may retrieve a child directly from the Press Club or the ESPN Zone. * Students will not be permitted to bring backpacks, duffle bags or any food or drink into the Press Club. They can leave belongings safely on the buses reserved for the evening. * Please encourage your child to attend the party at ESPN Zone as a fun and safe event after the prom. The party is open to students even if they do not attend the Prom. I would like to thank Niki Fleming and all the other parent volunteers who have made this dinner dance possible (and stayed up all night for the after party!). Please don’t hesitate to contact me or the Parents Association if you have any questions. We are looking forward to a wonderful evening. Sincerely, Rebecca Zug Assistant Principal and Dean of Students Submissions to this Newsletter This Upper School Newsletter is produced by parent volunteers on a rotating basis and is published each Wednesday during the school year.
