In so many ways the personal, the communal, the social issues which the great prophet Isaiah faced in his day are not so different from those we face today personally, in this country and worldwide. And so it is that the first reading from today's Mass needs little comment. Speaking on God's behalf, Isaiah says: "This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own." (Isaiah 58:1-9) These are not just 'spiritual' words; these are the raw facts we need to face and on which we must act.
