Last month in the House, we made history by passing H.R. 8 -- to enact universal background checks on every firearm purchase. It felt like the culmination of all the work of nearly one year of campaigning for Congress, getting elected, and delivering on my promise to work every day to make all of our communities safer.
Unfortunately, this legislation has already hit a roadblock in the Senate. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is refusing to even bring the bill up for a vote.
He’s scared that if it passes, the NRA (who he answers to) will be furious. And even if it doesn’t pass, McConnell and his backers in the Senate will be on the record as being against common-sense gun safety legislation.
Unfortunately, Leader McConnell has this power to block H.R. 8 from seeing the light of day. Fortunately, he’s up for re-election next year.
So I need your help right now. The NRA and their backers are going to be coming after me after the passage of H.R. 8, and as long as I continue to advocate for its passage in the Senate.
