Lent is a season of growth, of turning our lives over to the Lord more and more each day. Then in today's gospel, we are confronted with perhaps the greatest challenge of our lives: "So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect." Talk about the impossible! Let' catch our breath and realize that the Greek text of the gospel is more correctly read not as 'perfect' but rather as 'complete'. The sense of the Greek does not suggest or imply moral perfection but rather completeness, a 'coming to full maturity', a fulfillment. That's a realistic Lenten expectation. We work individually and collectively with God's grace to be more and more mature in our faith and in our daily activity. "This day the Lord, your God, commands you to observe these statutes and decrees." (Deuteronomy 26:16-19). 924 G St., NW, Washington, DC 20001 | Tel: (202) 772-4300 tel:2027724300 Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington © 2019 All rights reserved.
