Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is a common consequence of trauma or surgery, and the extent of functional recovery is often unsatisfactory. Even repair with the current “gold standard” autograft, where healthy sensory nerves are harvested to repair damaged nerves, cannot overcome the challenges of long distance axonal regeneration and reinnervate distal targets to restore function. To address this gap in care, Axonova has developed a revolutionary approach using tissue engineered nerve grafts (TENGs). TENGs are living three-dimensional nerve constructs that consist of longitudinally aligned axon tracts spanning discrete neuronal populations.

Axonova Lab Axonova is one of Pennovation's newest member companies, with an office and lab bench.They have also been named a JPOD @ Philadelphia resident company, through the University’s new collaboration with Johnson & Johnson Innovation and JLABS.Dr. Kritika Katiyar, Director of R&D, shares that Axonova chose Pennovation because, "The Pennovation Center, affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania, provides unique resources and acts as a networking hub that is key to facilitating translation of novel and innovative technologies." Along with Dr. Katiyar, the Axonova team is comprised of co-founders Dr. Doug Smith and Dr. Kacy Cullen, and Dr. Harry Ledebur as CEO.

The Axonova team is excited to put down roots in this city because "Philadelphia is well-positioned as a hub for small businesses. It is a growing space for start ups and the biotechnology industry, and has been a long-standing hub for the pharmaceutical and science industry. Additionally, the strong academic background in Philadelphia offers many great resources and an innovative environment that encourages growth of small businesses," Dr. Katiyar says. The Pennovation Center was thrilled to host FemmeHacks (http://femmehacks.io/index.html) for the 3rd year running! FemmeHacks is a beginner-friendly, collegiate hackathon for women-identifying individuals in Philly/NY/NJ, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania's Women in Computer Science (https://wics.cis.upenn.edu/) . Just under 200 women* got an early start over breakfast at 8am and then worked diligently throughout the day on various coding projects. University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann and School of Engineering Dean Vijay Kumar visited in the morning to engage in the atmosphere.

Tax Season is right around the corner. Luckily, PCI Ventures brought in their partner Stephano Slack for a day of tax prep programming at the Pennovation Center. CPAs from Stephano Slack hosted a lunch and learn and office hours where they reviewed necessary items startups need to address as they prepare for 2018 tax filings and answered tax and accounting questions from six startup companies.

Vanessa is a professor of Practice in Innovation & Entrepreneurship at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as the founder of Redesign Studio, a company that redesigns consumer products to solve consumer gripes - starting with her first invention, loopit, which are tangle-free stylish headphones. In conversation with 1776 CEO, Jennifer Maher, Vanessa shared her entrepreneurial journey and how she frees herself of judgment and failure.
