Have you filed your tax return yet? We can take courage since there are still over thirty days to do that without penalty. But don't so many of us have a penchant for procrastination?! Today's gospel brings us a curious episode in Jesus' ministry: Jesus meets a tax collector. The conversation which Luke records between Jesus and this fellow is utterly simple: "Follow me." No procrastination allowed! And so he does follow. In the culture of the day the tax collector - Levi by name - is considered a sinner because he collects taxes for an occupying government. Regardless of our personal political preferences, we are sinners, and this Lenten season is a renewed call by Jesus to follow him. And following leads to forgiveness and mercy. "I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners."
