Since last fall, we’ve taken a thoughtful look at how voices are brought forward in the local and national dialogue in the evolving exhibit A Seat at the Table (https://www.emkinstitute.org/explore-the-institute/exhibits/a-seat-at-the-table) . As spring approaches, A Seat at the Table continues to grow with input from partners and visitors. Inspired by the wise words of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm fifty years ago — “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair” — our exhibit invigorates conversation about identity and representation. At the Institute, a project like this renews our call to participate in democracy and empower others to make their voices heard. A project like this also has the added benefit of generating remarkable creative work like the community-designed chairs on display at the Institute today. The next phase of the exhibit will highlight the work of commissioned artists from across the country who will create chairs for historic and contemporary figures. Each chair that is part of the exhibit represents a distinct story worth hearing. I extend my best wishes for a healthy and happy spring, and hope to hear your voice at the Institute soon. With warmth, Mary K. Grant, Ph.D. President ============================================================ EVENTS | get involved _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ UPCOMING PROGRAM Meet Massachusetts political trailblazers on Tuesday, March 19 ** (https://www.emkinstitute.org/explore-the-institute/public-events-programs/public/ma-trailblazers) As Massachusetts and the nation see more women than ever serving in government, a panel of political leaders will discuss their pathways to civic leadership, insights from the campaign trail to creating change in public office, and how to increase and diversify women’s political representation at all levels of government. ** See the list of the panelists (https://www.emkinstitute.org/explore-the-institute/public-events-programs/public/ma-trailblazers) . Kennedy Institute partnered with the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy and the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation on a joint display of historic photos along the Greenway between Seaport Boulevard and Milk Street in Boston. Full-scale banners are hung with historic photographs of President Kennedy and Senator Kennedy during their time in office as well as an archival photo of their mother Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. Be sure to have a look at the banners on your next visit to the area. This partnership was made possible by the generous support of the James M. and Cathleen D. Stone Foundation. ** Read The Boston Globe story about the banners (https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2019/01/24/historic-photos-rose-kennedy-jack-and-ted-will-grace-banners-greenway-all-winter/JhyNtnpwwN1YCjWzBag6AM/story.html) . _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ON YOUR NEXT VISIT TO THE INSTITUTE What's new and happening now This month, you can debate the Prescription Drug Price Relief Act of 2019 in the Institute's replica Senate Chamber during ** the Today’s Vote program (https://www.emkinstitute.org/resources/todays-vote) . Offered daily, Today's Vote enables you to participate in a simulated Senate session and live floor debate on real legislation currently being considered by the U.S. Senate in Washington, D.C. And be sure to make time to enjoy the display of Senator Kennedy's paintings during your visit. Many people are surprised to learn that the Senator painted throughout his life. For him, it was a decades-long passion that he pursued alongside the rigors of work in the United States Senate. Brown Jr. ** (https://www.emkinstitute.org/join-and-support/membership) Although I live near Washington, D.C. and have visited the Institute only once so far, my continued membership in the Institute is very important to me. I served on the staff of the Sergeant at Arms of the Senate for ten years as the Senate's research services coordinator and have a long-standing personal interest in American government. Even as a part of the Senate staff, I did not have floor privileges. The Institute's impressive Senate replica brought me as close as possible to that experience, one that everyone should have. Senator Kennedy's contributions to our government, and particularly the U.S. Senate, are legion, making the Institute that bears his name a perfect way to remember not only the Senator, but also his many lasting contributions to American governance. Being an Institute member is a way for me to make a contribution to preserving a vital, visual, and available reminder of what truly makes America great — representative government — and I am eager to return. – Thomas C.
